Chapter 19 - The Ribbon

The therapy center opened eleven months after the wedding.

Margaret refused to let her name go on the building.

The board asked twice.

She said no twice.

“It was donor money. Put the children’s names on the wall.”

Daniel stood beside her at the opening.

Robert stood two rows back.

He and Margaret had moved back into the same bedroom three months earlier.

Daniel did not ask for details.

Some boundaries finally arrived late.

Emma handed Margaret oversized scissors.

A little boy from the speech therapy program held the ribbon.

Margaret looked terrified.

Daniel whispered:

“You walked five miles in dress shoes. You can cut ribbon.”

She elbowed him.

The crowd laughed.

Applause filled the entrance.

For one strange second, Daniel remembered the wedding ballroom.

Two hundred people silent.

His mother muddy and shaking.

Claire gripping his arm.

His father holding a microphone.

He had thought that night destroyed his future.

It had destroyed a lie.

Different thing.

After the ceremony, a board member asked Margaret if she planned to remain treasurer.

“No.”

Daniel looked at her.

“I told you I’d leave when I chose.”

She had recruited a professional controller.

“Boring is underrated,” Margaret said.

She planned to spend more time traveling with Robert.

Not isolation disguised as rest.

Daniel laughed.

Then Margaret handed him a small envelope.

Inside was the original screenshot of the fake message.

Mom, I need you to stay away from the wedding.

Daniel stared at it.

“Why are you giving me this?”

“Because I don’t need it anymore.”

He looked at her.

“What should I do with it?”

Margaret shrugged.

“Whatever helps you remember to call people yourself.”

May you like

Daniel folded it once.

Then put it in his wallet.
