Chapter 11 - EVERYONE HAD A LEASH

Ryan knew Lila and Evan had been together.

When Lila became pregnant, Ryan offered to claim the baby publicly if Evan kept helping him.

In return, Evan forged signatures, moved foundation money, and manipulated the estate deed.

Ryan had turned shame into currency.

Diane's pride.

Noah's gambling debt.

Evan's child.

My fear of losing my marriage.

Detective Vega traced the brake sabotage to Paul, Diane's longtime driver.

Paul first denied everything.

Then bank records showed a cash payment from Red Birch.

He confessed.

Ryan paid him to loosen the line.

My husband had not merely planned to ruin me.

He had created a way for my death to solve his financial problem.

I met Ryan once before the divorce filing.

Two deputies stood outside the room.

"You're really doing this?" he asked when I slid the papers across the table.

"You sound surprised."

"We could fix some of this."

"Which part?"

"The marriage."

I laughed.

"You planned the marriage before you met me."

"At first."

Those words hurt more than I expected.

"Then I loved you."

"Love doesn't loosen brake lines."

"I didn't tell Paul to hurt you."

"You paid him."

"For something else."

"What?"

He said nothing.

Then Ryan smiled.

"You think your family is clean?"

"No."

"Your mother hid Frank's warnings. Noah sold our introduction. Your father built a trust that made everybody greedy."

"My family made mistakes. They're finally telling the truth."

"And you?"

I froze.

He pulled out a photocopy of a canceled check.

One hundred thousand dollars.

Payable to Claire Carter.

From Whitmore Hospitality.

Six months before our wedding.

My signature on the back was real.

Mom stood behind the observation glass.

Her face changed.

Ryan leaned closer.

"When are you going to tell them what I bought from you?"

May you like

I knew exactly what the money had paid for.

And for the first time in this war, the secret was mine.
