Chapter 6 - THIRTY-FOUR MILLION DOLLARS

Carter Logistics called an emergency board meeting.
The bank's attorney placed six loan documents on the table.
My forged signature appeared on all of them.
Ryan joined by video.
"This is a misunderstanding."
Mom leaned toward the microphone.
"No. A misunderstanding is putting salt in coffee. This is fraud."
The bank agreed to pause enforcement for seventy-two hours while the signatures were investigated.
After the meeting, Mom handed me a letter from Frank.
Ruth,
If Ryan ever uses Claire's inheritance to secure debt, do not protect him from the consequences. I made that mistake too many times.
"Why didn't you show me this?"
"I hoped Frank would fix it before he died."
I wanted to be angry.
Mostly, I was tired of people hiding truth because they thought silence was kinder.
Frank had also given Mom a key.
Safe deposit box 312.
Inside we found foundation ledgers, account numbers, and a USB drive.
A note from Frank sat on top.
Claire,
If you're reading this, I failed to stop my son.
The records showed millions missing from the Whitmore Family Foundation.
Frank believed Diane had moved the money with Evan's help.
Noah traced the transfers.
Foundation money went to a shell company called Red Birch Consulting.
Red Birch paid hotel debt, private travel, and a luxury apartment in Miami.
"Whose apartment?" I asked.
Noah turned the screen.
Lila Grant.
A photograph loaded.
Ryan stood beside a blonde woman at a charity event. His hand rested on her waist.
I remembered that night.
I had been sitting beside my dying father.
Noah kept tracing.
Then he stopped.
"Claire."
Red Birch was not owned by Diane.
Registered agent: Ryan Whitmore.
Ryan had been stealing from his mother too.
My phone rang.
Diane.
Her voice shook.
"Claire, I need to see you."
"No."
"Please. I found something in Ryan's study."
"What?"
"Frank's original ledger."
May you like
She paused.
"And proof Ryan has another family."
