Chapter 9 - THE SHAREHOLDER VOTE

At 9 a.m., I sat in the front row of Carter Logistics.
Ryan expected me to hide.
At 9:14, he walked through the doors.
"Hi, Claire."
Detective Vega stepped forward.
"Ryan Whitmore, you're under arrest."
"For what?"
"Forgery, insurance fraud, witness intimidation. We'll keep counting downtown."
His smile disappeared when Diane entered behind him.
"Mom?"
She carried Frank's original company binder.
"I found it in storage," she said.
Then she placed a notarized affidavit on the board table.
Her confession.
Diane admitted helping Ryan move foundation money, conceal debts, and pressure me into signing a settlement.
Ryan stared at her.
"You stupid woman."
Diane flinched.
Then straightened.
"No. I was stupid when I thought protecting my son meant protecting him from consequences."
The board froze the disputed shares.
The bank suspended its claim while the fraud case moved forward.
As police led Ryan away, he leaned toward me.
"You think this makes you strong?"
I said nothing.
"You always needed your mother and brother to fight for you."
Mom stood.
"Claire needed us because you spent years teaching her to doubt herself."
Ryan laughed.
Then he looked at Noah.
"Tell her how we met."
Noah's face changed.
My stomach dropped.
"What does he mean?"
Ryan smiled.
"Ask your brother who paid him to introduce us."
The room went silent.
Noah looked away.
Later, in an empty conference room, he finally spoke.
"I knew Ryan before you did."
"How?"
"College."
Ryan had always told me they met at our engagement party.
Noah swallowed.
"After Dad got sick, Ryan wanted an introduction to you."
"And you gave him one."
"Yes."
"Why?"
His eyes filled.
"I had gambling debt."
"How much did he pay you?"
"Twenty thousand."
I stepped back.
Noah whispered, "Claire, I didn't know he wanted the trust."
Mom's voice was quiet.
"Who told him about the trust?"
May you like
Noah closed his eyes.
"Evan."
