Chapter 3 - FRANK'S LAST WARNING

Frank had been sick, but he had not been confused.

I remembered my last visit.

He had taken my hand and asked, "Does Ryan treat you well?"

I laughed because I didn't know how else to answer.

Frank did not.

"If you ever have to choose between peace and truth," he said, "choose truth. Peace built on fear isn't peace."

At the time, I thought he meant marriage.

Now I wasn't sure.

We went to St. Vincent's with our attorney, Maya Chen.

The original visitor log showed me at 4:17 p.m.

Evan Shaw entered at 4:56.

"Why would Ryan erase me?" I asked.

The records clerk swallowed. "Mr. Whitmore also asked about a recorder."

"What recorder?"

"Frank kept a small voice recorder for notes. After he died, family collected his belongings."

Ryan had packed Frank's room.

That afternoon, police escorted me to the estate to collect clothes and documents.

Diane blocked the doorway.

"You are not entering my home."

The officer checked my driver's license. "Mrs. Whitmore is still a resident."

Diane stepped aside.

Upstairs, my passport was missing.

So was my father's original trust agreement.

Noah searched Frank's study.

"Claire."

He held up an empty velvet case.

A label inside read: VOICE RECORDER.

Ryan appeared at the top of the stairs, jaw bruised from Noah's punch.

"You need to leave."

I held up the case.

"Where is Frank's recorder?"

For half a second, fear moved across his face.

Diane saw it.

"Ryan," she said sharply. "Don't say another word."

I looked from mother to son.

"You both knew about it."

Ryan's voice hardened. "You're making accusations you can't prove."

"Then give me the recorder."

He said nothing.

As we left, Maya's phone buzzed.

Someone had emailed her an audio file.

No message. No name.

We played it in the car.

Frank's weak voice filled the speakers.

"Sit down, Ryan."

My husband answered.

"Dad, you're tired."

"I'm dying," Frank said, "not stupid."

May you like

Then came the sentence that made Noah pull the car over.

"I know you forged Claire's signature."
