Chapter 5 - THE PROTECTIVE ORDER

Maya told us not to contact Evan.
Noah sent one message anyway.
WE HAVE THE AUDIO.
Evan called within minutes.
"You people have no idea what you're touching."
Noah put him on speaker. "Then explain it."
"Frank was sick."
"Was he sick when you stole his recorder?"
Silence.
Evan hung up.
An hour later, a courier delivered a memory card.
The missing twelve minutes.
Frank's voice returned.
"Ryan, Lila called me."
Ryan cursed.
"She says she's pregnant."
"I'll handle it."
"She is not a hotel invoice. You don't handle a woman."
Then Frank said, "You tell Claire about Lila. You tell her about the shares. Or I do."
Ryan's voice dropped.
"If Claire leaves, I lose access to Carter collateral."
There it was.
Not heartbreak.
Access.
Evan interrupted.
"Frank, enough."
"No. You helped him."
"Keep your voice down."
"I'll give everything to Ruth tomorrow."
The recording ended.
Before sunset, police arrived at Noah's apartment.
"Claire Whitmore?"
"Yes."
One officer handed me a temporary protective order.
Ryan alleged I had assaulted him and Diane, threatened to return armed, and become financially unstable.
I almost laughed.
Then the officer continued.
"Mr. Whitmore is also seeking emergency control of jointly managed accounts."
Exactly what Diane said on the dinner video.
Maya filed an emergency response.
At the courthouse the next morning, Ryan arrived in a navy suit and told the judge, "I love my wife. I just don't know what she's capable of anymore."
Maya stood.
"Mr. Whitmore, did you slap her first?"
He hesitated.
"Yes."
"Did you raise your fist again?"
"I was defending myself."
"From a woman six feet away?"
Then Maya played the full dinner video.
Diane's plan filled the courtroom.
The judge removed the order against me and denied Ryan control of the accounts.
I thought we had won.
Then Maya got a call from Carter Logistics.
Twenty-eight percent of our family shares had been pledged against Ryan's expansion debt.

The loan balance was thirty-four million dollars.
