The bankruptcy deal took three weeks.
Carter Family Holdings purchased the flagship hotel's operating assets.
Not Ryan's personal debt.
Not Red Birch.
Not the Miami apartment.
The actual business.
Employees kept their jobs.
Benefits stayed in place.
Vendors received new contracts.
Ryan lost control.
Outside court, he turned toward me.
"You took my company."
"The court sold a company you buried under debt."
"You planned this."
"No. Your father did."
Frank's lease clause had been written eleven years earlier.
Maybe he knew exactly what kind of storm his son might create.
The hotel reopened under temporary management.
No Carter family member received unilateral control.
Mom insisted on independent audits.
Diane agreed to cooperate with prosecutors.
She still faced charges for the foundation fraud.
One afternoon, she asked to speak privately with Mom.
They sat across from each other in a conference room.
Diane said, "I don't expect forgiveness."
Mom nodded. "Good."
"I wanted you to feel small at that dinner."
"You succeeded for about thirty seconds."
Diane gave a broken laugh.
"Then you dumped bones in my lap."
"That helped."
They did not hug.
They did not become friends.
Some wounds need boundaries more than reconciliation.
When Mom came out, I asked, "How was it?"
"Useful."
Then Detective Vega called.
The grand jury had returned indictments against Ryan, Evan, and Paul.
But one charge was suddenly in trouble.
The brake sabotage.
"Why?" I asked.
"Paul changed his statement."
My stomach dropped.
"He says Ryan didn't pay him."
"Then who?"
Vega paused.
"Your brother."
I looked across the office.
Noah saw my face.
"Claire?"
Police arrived ten minutes later.
Noah was taken in for questioning.
Paul had bank records showing a ten-thousand-dollar payment from an account in Noah Carter's name.
