Chapter 15 - THE SENTENCES

Ryan received years in federal prison.

Evan did too.

Paul took a plea deal.

Diane received a shorter sentence because she cooperated, repaid stolen foundation funds, and testified against her son.

Court dates.

Noah attending recovery meetings and telling Emma the truth about his old gambling debt.

And me signing divorce papers on a rainy Tuesday.

I expected thunder inside me.

Instead, I felt tired.

Maya asked, "What do you want from the settlement?"

"The things that are mine."

"House?"

"No."

"Cars?"

"No."

"Money?"

"Enough to separate cleanly."

I did not want Ryan's empire.

I wanted my name off his lies.

Carter Logistics recovered the disputed shares after the loan documents were declared fraudulent.

The bank pursued Ryan's bankruptcy estate instead.

The old Whitmore estate remained under Carter Family Holdings.

One morning, Mom and I stood in the dining room where everything had begun.

The table was still there.

"Do you want it?" she asked.

"No."

"Good."

"Burn it?"

Mom smiled.

"Too dramatic."

We sold it.

Then she handed me a proposal.

A nonprofit wanted to lease the estate and convert it into transitional housing for women leaving financially abusive marriages.

I read the first page.

"You're serious."

"Very."

"Diane will hate it."

Mom raised an eyebrow.

"Diane doesn't own the house."

I laughed for the first time in weeks.

Then Mom touched my arm.

"Claire, I need you to understand something."

"What?"

"That dinner did not save us."

I frowned.

She continued.

"The truth saved us. The dinner only made us stop avoiding it."

I looked at the empty space where Diane's chair had been.

Mom was right.

The soup was not the victory.

Walking out was.
