Chapter 14 - THE LAST FRAME

The account in Noah's name had been opened online three months earlier.
Identity verification used a driver's license he had reported stolen the previous year.
Someone had built a fallback suspect.
Vega traced the login.
Whitmore estate.
Then the device.
Diane's old tablet.
"I gave that tablet to Ryan for Christmas," she said.
We searched the estate's security archive again.
Not the dining room.
The driveway.
At 5:43 p.m. on memorial night, Ryan walked to my car.
Five minutes later, Paul arrived in a service van.
They spoke beside the garage.
Then Ryan handed him an envelope.
The camera had no sound.
It didn't need any.
Paul changed his story again.
Ryan promised to pay his legal fees if he blamed Noah.
Noah was released.
The brake charge returned.
Evan pleaded guilty first.
He admitted the marriage-access plan, forged signatures, shell companies, and fake deed.
Ryan went to trial.
I testified for two days.
His attorney asked, "Do you hate your husband?"
"No."
"After everything?"
"I don't need to hate him to tell the truth."
Diane testified.
Lila testified.
Noah testified.
Mom was last.
Ryan's attorney tried to provoke her.
"Mrs. Carter, you dumped a plate of food into Diane Whitmore's lap, correct?"
"Yes."
"You were angry."
"Very."
"And now your company owns the hotel business her family built."
"Bankruptcy court sold operating assets to an independently governed company."
"Do you enjoy seeing the Whitmores lose everything?"
Mom looked at Diane.
Then Ryan.
"No."
The courtroom went still.
"I would have preferred a dinner where everyone got steak."
Two days later, the jury returned guilty verdicts on fraud, forgery, conspiracy, insurance fraud, witness intimidation, and the brake sabotage.
When court ended, Ryan asked for thirty seconds with me.
"Was any of it real?" he asked.
"Some of it."
His eyes filled.
"That's the worst part."
Then I walked away.
Outside, Mom was holding a final page from Frank's letter.

At the bottom he had written:
Claire, when the truth finally costs you something, pay it anyway.
