Chapter 18 - WHAT NOAH OWED ME

Noah and I took longer.

Trust does not rebuild because a villain goes to prison.

He had still taken money to introduce Ryan to me.

He had still hidden it for years.

One night after a Carter Logistics meeting, he stopped me in the parking garage.

"I keep wanting to explain."

"I know."

"But explanations sound like excuses."

"Usually."

He nodded.

Then he handed me a check.

Twenty thousand dollars.

The exact amount Ryan had paid him nine years earlier.

"I don't want it."

"I know."

"Then why are you giving it to me?"

"Because I need to stop pretending the money disappeared just because I regret it."

I looked at him.

"What should I do with it?"

"Whatever you want."

I donated it to the legal-aid program at the estate.

Noah did not ask for credit.

That mattered.

Later, Emma asked me why her father had been arrested.

I told her the age-appropriate truth.

"Someone used an old mistake against him. Then they tried to frame him for something he didn't do."

"Did Dad do something bad?"

"Yes."

She looked worried.

"Is he bad?"

"No."

People were not court verdicts.

They were patterns.

Choices.

What they did after being confronted with truth.

Ryan lied harder.

Noah stopped.

Diane resisted, then confessed.

Mom had hidden warnings, then admitted she was wrong.

And me?

I had spent years confusing endurance with loyalty.

That was my pattern.

I was trying to stop too.

When I told Mom that, she said, "Good."

"That's all?"

"What do you want, a speech?"

I laughed.

She hugged me.

May you like

Then whispered, "You were never weak, Claire. You were just trained to make peace before you checked the price."

For once, I let myself believe her.
