Chapter 1 - THE BOY IN THE SNOW

By the time Richard Hale saw his grandson through the lodge window, the boy's lips were turning blue.

"What the hell is that?"

The birthday toast stopped in Richard's hand.

Outside, nine-year-old Noah stood barefoot on the stone terrace while snow blew across the mountain. He wore pajama pants, a thin sweater, and nothing else. Both arms were wrapped around a small wooden airplane.

Richard dropped his glass and ran.

"Noah!"

The boy looked up. "Grandpa... I made it for your birthday."

Richard ripped off his overcoat, wrapped Noah in it, and carried him inside. The child shook so hard his teeth clicked.

Mark, Richard's forty-year-old son, stepped forward with an irritated sigh. He did not ask if Noah was okay. He reached for the airplane.

"Dad, don't make this dramatic. It's just a small punishment. He stole wood from the workshop and talked back to Claudia."

Noah flinched.

Mark grabbed for him.

Richard drove a shoulder into his son's chest. Mark crashed through a display of silver birthday branches, scattering glass ornaments across the floor.

"Richard!" Claudia screamed.

She lunged for the airplane.

Richard caught her wrist.

"Don't."

The room went silent.

Richard looked at Noah's bare, reddened feet.

"A small punishment?"

Mark pushed himself up. "He's my son. You don't get to tell us how to discipline him."

Richard pulled Noah closer. The boy was so cold that Richard could feel the trembling through two layers of wool. Around them, the birthday guests stared at their plates, suddenly fascinated by anything except the child who had been left outside.

"I've got a small punishment for you too."

Mark and Claudia exchanged a frightened glance.

That bothered Richard more than their words. It was not the look of angry parents. It was the look of people afraid he had noticed something.

Then Noah pressed his face into Richard's shoulder.

"Please don't make me go home with them."

Richard's birthday dinner ended right there.

But the nightmare was only beginning.
