Chapter 18 - THE COURTHOUSE

Three months later, Mark entered federal court in a dark suit without a tie.

He pleaded guilty to multiple fraud and forgery charges rather than face trial on the full financial case. Separate state charges covered child endangerment and abuse-related conduct.

Claudia accepted her own plea agreement and permanently lost any parental role in Noah's life.

Richard stood when the judge invited him to speak.

Mark watched him with desperate eyes.

Richard could have asked for the lightest possible sentence.

Instead he said, "My son is more than the worst thing he has done. But the people he hurt are more important than his comfort today. I spent years protecting him from consequences. I will not ask this court to repeat my mistake."

Mark looked away.

The judge imposed a substantial prison sentence, restitution, and financial penalties. The state court later added its own restrictions, including no contact with Noah unless approved through a therapeutic process.

Outside, reporters crowded Richard.

"Did you know about the abuse?"

That question stopped him.

"I knew Noah had become quiet. I knew Mark had a temper. I knew there were financial warning signs. I did not know the full truth, but I had enough pieces that I should have asked harder questions."

The cameras went still.

"Wealth doesn't make a family safe," Richard continued. "Sometimes it makes hiding easier."

He walked away.

That evening, he found Noah in the workshop wearing safety glasses too big for his face.

The repaired wooden airplane sat on the bench.

Richard had added a thin brass strip along the cracked wing.

"Why didn't you hide the crack?" Noah asked.

"Because cracks aren't shameful. Pretending they never happened is what gets people in trouble."

Noah traced the brass line.

"Mom would like it."

Richard smiled. "I think so too."

Then Noah looked up.

"Grandpa? My school has Grandparents Day next month."

"Sounds dangerous."

Noah laughed.

May you like

"Will you come?"

"Try keeping me away."
