Chapter 6 - WHAT SARAH KNEW

Thomas Vance had worked beside Richard for twenty-three years.

Now he stood in the lodge at one in the morning looking like a man caught between loyalty and fear.

"Mark said you had become violent and confused," Thomas admitted. "He wanted a witness."

Dana narrowed her eyes. "Did you help with the incapacity plan?"

"I reviewed a draft. I didn't know the doctor was fake."

Mark snapped, "Don't say another word."

Thomas looked at him sharply.

Sheriff Lewis separated them and began taking statements.

Then Dana's phone rang.

"Mountain Federal confirmed Sarah's box was accessed three weeks ago," she said. "The authorized people were Richard and Mark."

Richard faced his son.

"What did you remove?"

Mark said nothing.

Thomas whispered, "Richard... I know what used to be in it."

He explained that Sarah had once brought him records showing Mark moving money through a company vendor account. The transfers stopped after she confronted him.

"How much?" Richard asked.

"About four hundred thousand at the time."

Richard's voice dropped. "And you never told me?"

"Sarah begged me to wait until I had proof. I was a coward."

Sarah also owned nearly three percent of Hale Aeronautics through shares inherited from her father. She had placed them in trust for Noah and named Richard successor trustee if Mark was ever accused of financial misconduct.

"The original trust document disappeared after Sarah died," Thomas said.

Richard had to turn away before he hit him.

A deputy entered carrying a wet, half-burned photograph.

"We found Mrs. Hale in the maintenance shed burning papers."

The photograph showed Sarah beside a bank box, holding a document with Mark's signature.

Then another deputy brought in Noah's scorched backpack.

Most photographs survived.

Elena picked up one broken cedar corner and shook it.

Something clicked inside.

Richard pressed a tiny wooden plug he remembered building years ago.

A hidden compartment slid open.

Inside were the silver key and a microSD card wrapped in wax paper.

Mark went white.

Then he ran.
