Chapter 15 - WHAT CONSEQUENCES LOOK LIKE

Mark was arrested at his Denver home.

Claudia was charged separately. Federal agents froze the Miami condo, the shell companies, and several accounts tied to Noah's missing money.

The forensic audit widened.

Richard learned that his son had used family influence like a weapon for years. Vendors had stayed quiet. Employees had approved questionable expenses. People assumed Richard would protect Mark because Richard always had.

That realization hurt almost as much as the theft.

Dana met Richard in the lodge library.

"We may recover most of the trust money. Not all."

"Do it."

"And the board wants a public statement."

Richard shook his head. "Not yet. Noah comes first."

Upstairs, Maya helped Noah pack for a temporary move to Richard's Denver home, where the boy would be closer to school and counseling.

Noah came down carrying Sarah's letter.

"Can I keep this?"

"It's yours."

"Dad used to say Mom was too emotional."

Richard sat beside him. "Your mother was scared, but she was also brave. Those can happen at the same time."

Noah thought about that.

"Were you scared?"

"When I saw you outside? Yes."

"You didn't look scared."

"Adults get good at hiding things. Sometimes too good."

Noah leaned against him.

Later that evening, Dana received another report.

"We found where part of the missing trust money went."

Richard expected another condo or account.

Instead she showed him a payment schedule.

For eighteen months, Mark had been paying a private behavioral consultant to write reports describing Noah as unstable, aggressive, and dishonest.

The reports were false.

And they had already been sent to a boarding school in Switzerland.

Mark had planned Noah's removal long before the birthday dinner.
