Chapter 7 - THE RECORDING

Mark made it six steps before Elena caught him.
He swung at her.
Sheriff Lewis and a deputy took him to the floor.
Noah screamed.
Richard pulled the boy against his chest. "Don't look."
Mark shouted, "Dad! Tell them to get off me!"
For most of Richard's life, those words would have worked. Richard had rescued him from school suspensions, lawsuits, taxes, debts, and one drunken wreck.
Not tonight.
"Listen to the sheriff," Richard said.
Dana inserted the microSD card into an offline laptop.
It held statements, messages, scanned trust papers, and audio files.
Sarah's voice filled the room.
"If you're hearing this, I decided I needed a record Mark couldn't talk me out of keeping."
She described missing money, screaming, threats, and Mark punching a wall beside her head.
Then Mark's recorded voice said, "When my father dies, everything comes to me."
Sarah spoke again.
"Richard, if you hear this, protect Noah even if protecting him means finally seeing your son clearly."
Noah began to sob.
Richard shut the laptop.
"Enough."
Mark sat cuffed against the wall. "She was trying to destroy me."
"She was trying to protect your child."
Mark looked at Noah. "He's my son."
Noah whispered, "I don't want to be."
The room went still.
Then Dana's laptop chimed.
She opened a secure report and stared.
"Richard, we found Noah's trust balance."
"How bad?"
"It should contain almost eleven million dollars."
May you like
She turned the screen toward him.
"There is less than two."
