Chapter 10 - THE BOARDROOM

Claire arrived after the emergency meeting had started.

Every conversation stopped.

Two Vance-linked directors sat beside Nathan Kessler.

James Porter's chair was empty.

Claire placed Henry's Harbor 6 evidence on the table.

"Before you sell anything, we are going to talk about why this company is in danger."

One director groaned.

"Claire, not now."

"Especially now."

She disclosed Harbor 6.

Then the Vance conspiracy.

Then Sloan's fraud.

Then the money moved through Lily's trust.

Kessler repeated his confession for the board.

The proposed buyer was confirmed as a Vivian Vance shell company.

If marriage failed, the Vances planned to buy Mercer cheap after scandal.

"They wanted us ashamed enough to sell," Claire said.

So she did the opposite.

She froze family-controlled transactions, opened the Harbor 6 claims process, and appointed an independent restructuring committee.

A director slammed the table.

"You'll destroy shareholder value."

Claire answered, "Then maybe that value included money we owed people."

Halfway through the meeting, Lily knocked.

She had found Adrian's old tablet in a wedding box.

A hidden app opened with his birthday.

Inside were recorded strategy notes.

Adrian's voice:

"If Claire becomes difficult, the child can trigger her. She reacts irrationally when Lily is frightened."

Sloan answered:

"Do not physically harm the girl."

"I don't need to."

Another file said that once Claire was declared unfit, Lily would be sent to St. Anne's.

Rachel searched the name.

Private residential behavioral program.

Three states away.

The application had already been filed.

Applicant: Adrian Vance.

Evaluator: Dr. Samuel Crane.

Deposit: two hundred thousand dollars.

Paid from Lily's own education trust.

Claire stared at the screen.

Adrian planned to use Lily's money to remove Lily from her own life.

Then Rachel opened the attached evaluation.

It described seven-year-old Lily as manipulative, oppositional, and obsessed with "maternal rescue fantasies."

Claire read one line twice.

The behavior used as proof of illness was Lily telling adults she needed to save her mother.
