Chapter 15 - THE TRIAL

The judge refused to let Adrian's lawyers turn Lily into a spectacle.

She testified by closed-circuit video with a child advocate present.

The prosecution opened with wedding footage.

Adrian shouting, "Don't open it."

Lily turning the key.

Claire falling from the archive room.

Then toxicology.

Crane's testimony.

The Riverstone reservation.

The St. Anne's deposit.

The forged incapacity petition.

The Vance ledger.

Megan Shaw.

Robert Sloan.

David Mercer.

Claire testified for two days.

Adrian's lawyer attacked her judgment.

"You admit you ignored warnings from your daughter."

"Yes."

"You admit your company concealed worker deaths."

"Yes."

"You admit your father participated in that concealment."

"Yes."

The lawyer paused.

"Then why should this jury believe your judgment now?"

Claire looked toward the monitor where Lily waited.

"Because being wrong before is not a reason to stay wrong."

Then Lily testified.

"Why did you open the door?" the prosecutor asked.

"Because Mommy was inside."

"How did you know?"

"I saw Adrian take her there."

"Why didn't you tell another adult?"

"I did."

Lily's face tightened.

"Somebody said I was confused."

That sentence stayed in the courtroom.

The jury deliberated two days.

Adrian was convicted of kidnapping, unlawful imprisonment, fraud, conspiracy, administering a controlled substance, attempted custodial interference, and financial crimes.

Vivian was convicted of conspiracy, racketeering, fraud, obstruction, and homicide-related charges in Henry's death.

Crane lost his medical license and went to prison.

Sloan received a reduced but real sentence.

David Mercer was convicted of obstruction and conspiracy.

The marriage was annulled for fraud.

Vance shell assets were seized for restitution.

Claire expected victory to feel louder.

Instead, it felt like finally putting something heavy down.

Then Brooks handed her one last photograph from Vivian's files.

The archive door.

On the back Vivian had written:

THE CHILD WILL BE THE PROBLEM.

Under it, in Henry's handwriting, someone had added:

OR THE SOLUTION.
