Chapter 13 - THE ESCAPE

Adrian's ankle monitor was found in a parking garage.
Brooks ordered Claire and Lily moved to a secure residence.
They were halfway there when a black SUV blocked the street.
Adrian stepped out.
No gun visible.
That made him more frightening, not less.
He walked toward Claire's car.
"Lily."
Claire locked the doors.
Lily whispered, "Mommy."
"It's okay."
Adrian reached the hood.
Then an unmarked police SUV slammed into his vehicle from behind.
Officers poured out.
Adrian ran.
He made it twenty yards before Brooks tackled him onto the pavement.
As officers dragged him up, he looked toward Claire and shouted:
"Ask your mother what Henry really left you!"
Claire froze.
Her mother, Evelyn Mercer, had been dead for ten years.
Rachel searched Henry's blue-box inventory.
One item had never been delivered.
E.M. LETTER - HOLD UNTIL CLAIRE REMARRIES OR TURNS FORTY.
Claire was thirty-nine.
James Porter had kept it.
He brought it himself.
"I should have given this to you when the wedding began."
"Why didn't you?"
"Because I failed Henry once and became afraid of making another wrong decision."
"Fear again."
"Yes."
Claire opened the letter.
Claire,
If you are marrying because you are afraid of raising Lily alone, don't.
Tears came before she reached the next line.
Evelyn wrote that loneliness made intelligent women ignore small alarms.
She knew because she had done it with Henry.
Your father is not a bad man. But power makes good people believe explanation is optional.
Evelyn had created a separate forty-million-dollar trust for Lily.
No corporate shares.
No family control.
Just education, healthcare, housing, and independence.
Successor protector: Rachel Kim.
Not a spouse.
Not a Mercer.
Then James handed Lily another envelope.
Evelyn had written it before Lily was born.
Little girl,
If you are anything like your mother, you will ask questions at inconvenient times.
Please do.

The last line made Lily grin.
Doors are made to open.
