Chapter 11 - THE WOMAN BEFORE CLAIRE

St. Anne's refunded the deposit.

Crane's license was suspended.

Then Rachel received a call from Megan Shaw.

Adrian's former fiancée.

Claire had never heard her name.

Megan met them in a quiet office.

"He did it to me too."

Adrian tracked her phone, isolated her from friends, and used Crane to describe her as anxious when she resisted.

When Megan tried to leave, Vivian threatened her family's business through debt.

She reported Adrian.

Robert Sloan made the complaint disappear.

Megan escaped before the wedding.

Then she produced messages.

Vivian: My son needs a woman who understands structure.

Adrian: If Claire Mercer were easier to reach, none of this would matter.

The message was dated two years before Claire met him.

Claire had never been the next woman.

She had been the target.

Megan also had a photograph of Adrian, Vivian, Sloan, and Crane at a private dinner four years earlier.

The night before Henry's stroke.

Adrian had been there.

No longer indirect.

No longer theory.

Then Brooks called.

Sloan had been attacked in federal custody.

He survived with a broken jaw.

On a legal pad, he wrote one name.

DAVID MERCER.

Claire stared.

Her uncle David.

Henry's younger brother.

Retired federal prosecutor.

The man who had advised Claire to keep the scandal quiet.

Brooks searched David's phone.

Messages to Vivian appeared.

D.M.: Claire is emotionally weaker than Henry.

V.V.: Adrian can manage that.

D.M.: Keep Lily out of it.

Vivian: Children are always in it.

David had not designed Adrian's wedding-night plan, but he knew enough to let it continue because he believed Adrian would stabilize the family and protect Mercer.

Then, after everything broke, he tried to silence Sloan.

David was arrested.

One final message had been sent the morning of the wedding.

IF CLAIRE OPENS HENRY'S BLUE BOX, USE THE GIRL.

Claire looked at Lily.

This conspiracy had never considered a child a person.

Only leverage.
