Chapter 14 - THE WOMEN WHO DISAPPEAR ON PAPER

Claire met Megan again after Adrian's capture.

Megan said something Claire could not forget.

"Vivian never needed women dead. She needed them discredited."

A missing woman raised questions.

An unstable woman generated paperwork.

Hospital records.

Court orders.

School placements.

People trained not to listen.

So Claire went public.

Not with Lily's private records.

Her own.

"I was drugged on my wedding day," she told the cameras. "My husband locked me in an archive room and planned to have me admitted to a private facility while seeking control of my daughter and family assets."

She paused.

"My daughter opened the door."

Then Claire disclosed Harbor 6.

"My father's company also hid a deadly safety failure fifteen years ago. We are reopening those claims."

Mercer Maritime stock fell twenty-eight percent.

Claire did not regret it.

Families of the dead dockworkers came forward.

One man's son learned his father had been falsely blamed for the accident.

Truth did not bring him back.

It restored his name.

Federal prosecutors announced indictments against Adrian, Vivian, Crane, David Mercer, two directors, and a law-enforcement officer who had helped attack Sloan.

Robert Sloan accepted a cooperation agreement but still faced prison.

No one would become innocent because someone else was worse.

Then prosecutors found an old complaint from Megan that had been buried years earlier.

The officer who dismissed it was the same man tied to David Mercer.

The pattern finally had a shape.

Lily watched the news from the couch.

"Are they going to talk about me?"

"Some people will."

"I don't want them to."

Claire turned off the television.

"Then we don't watch."

Lily leaned against her.

For three years, Claire had believed powerful adults could decide what information a child was ready for.

Now she asked.

"Do you want to know what happens at the trial?"

"Some."

"How much?"

Lily thought.

"Enough to know if we're safe."

Claire nodded.

"Then that's what you get."

The trial date was set for eight months later.

And Adrian's lawyer announced that Lily herself would be called as a witness.
