Chapter 17 - THE OTHER WOMEN

The three women did not have Mercer money.

That was part of why Adrian chose them.

One was a teacher.

One owned a small bakery.

One had worked for Vivian.

All described the same pattern.

Charm.

Isolation.

Crane's evaluations.

Sloan's legal threats.

Debt pressure from Vance companies.

None had been locked in an archive room.

They had been locked inside paperwork.

Claire helped fund independent counsel but did not control their cases.

Megan insisted on that.

"We don't need another rich family deciding what's best for us."

Claire nodded.

"You're right."

Civil suits followed.

So did a wider investigation into Crane's psychiatric reports and Sloan's settlements.

More files surfaced.

Some accusations were proven.

Some were not.

Claire learned not to treat every new claim as a weapon for her own story.

Evidence mattered.

So did boundaries.

At Mercer Maritime, the independent board asked Claire to return as CEO.

She refused the first offer.

Accepted the second only after governance rules changed.

No Mercer family member could control the board.

No family attorney could serve as sole trust counsel.

Whistleblower complaints went directly to an outside committee.

Rachel remained Claire's lawyer because she still told her no.

Lily liked that.

"Rachel is bossy."

"That's why we keep her."

One evening, Lily found Henry's envelope again.

SHE NOTICES EVERYTHING.

"Grandpa was right."

Claire smiled.

"Sometimes."

Lily frowned.

"Sometimes?"

"Noticing is only the first part. You also have to check."

Lily thought about it.

"Like the key?"

"Exactly."

Claire had spent years confusing instinct with certainty.

Adrian had exploited that.

The future needed something better.

Questions.

Evidence.

People allowed to disagree.

Then Megan called.

The civil court had approved a joint restitution fund using seized Vance assets.

She wanted the old Mercer estate as a temporary legal center.

Claire looked at the archive hallway.

The place where she had been trapped.

"What would we call it?"

Lily answered from the couch before Megan could.

"The Open Door."

May you like

Claire laughed.

For once, the obvious answer was also the right one.
