Chapter 9 - THE RED KEY

Crane admitted increasing Henry's anticoagulant exposure and giving him a sedative at Vivian's request.
Henry's stroke had been engineered.
Vivian did not administer the drugs herself.
She did not need to.
Claire sat alone afterward and refused to turn her father into a saint just because he had been murdered.
Harbor 6 still mattered.
So did the truth.
Then Rachel brought a draft will Henry had never executed.
One line stood out:
If Claire ever learns the truth about my death, give Lily the red key.
Lily looked up.
"Grandpa's boat key."
Henry's old sailboat sat untouched in a private marina.
The red key opened a narrow compartment beneath the navigation table.
Inside were waterproof envelopes.
For Claire.
For federal investigators.
For the Harbor 6 families.
For James Porter.
And one for Lily.
Claire opened hers first.
I protected this company when I should have protected people from it.
Henry admitted Harbor 6 in his own handwriting.
He named Sloan.
He named executives.
He called himself "a coward wearing a chairman's suit."
Claire cried because he was not innocent and because he finally knew it.
The investigators' envelope contained original safety reports and Vance payment records.
Then Claire opened Lily's envelope.
Lily, if adults are telling you not to ask questions, ask two.
Under the sentence was a photograph of Henry holding three-year-old Lily.
On the back:
SHE NOTICES EVERYTHING.
Lily smiled.
Rachel's phone rang.
Mercer Maritime's board had called an emergency meeting without Claire.
Agenda: sell the company before the criminal cases destroyed its value.
Rachel checked the proposed buyer.
A Cayman shell corporation.
Owner hidden.
Claire already knew.
"Vivian."
Rachel nodded.
Even in custody, the Vances had one final takeover route waiting to close automatically.
May you like
Claire stood.
"Then we're going to the boardroom."
