Chapter 7 - THE MOTHER THEY WANTED

The scheme against Claire was not one lie.

It was a character they were building for a judge.

Small transfers entered Lily's education trust, then moved into an account opened under Claire's name.

She had never seen it.

Crane's fake psychiatric report described her as unstable.

Adrian's wedding-night drugging would create a medical crisis.

Then the money trail would make her look financially abusive.

Rachel stared at the documents.

"They weren't only trying to steal the company."

"No."

"They were building a mother a court could hate."

Vivian Vance called Claire that night.

"You should hear my side."

"You have one if you're under oath."

"Your father destroyed my husband."

"Your husband tried to seize his company."

Vivian's voice turned cold.

"Henry destroyed him publicly."

"So you murdered my father?"

A pause.

"Careful with words you cannot prove."

She hung up.

The forged transfers led to Mercer CFO Nathan Kessler.

He admitted approving them after Sloan called them tax balancing.

"You didn't ask?"

"I trusted Robert."

Kessler resigned and cooperated.

He revealed Adrian's planned board agenda for the morning after the wedding:

Suspend Claire as CEO.

Recognize Adrian's temporary spousal proxy.

Place Lily under emergency guardianship.

Appoint Adrian interim executive chairman.

Everything required Claire to be hospitalized and Lily to stay quiet.

Then Lily's school called.

Someone had submitted pickup papers naming Vivian Vance as authorized guardian.

Police reached the school before anyone arrived.

Inside Lily's backpack, a teacher found an envelope no one recognized.

A photograph showed Claire unconscious in a hospital bed.

Under it:

NEXT TIME, THE DOOR STAYS LOCKED.

Lily started crying.

"Are we leaving?"

Claire held her.

For generations, the Mercers had responded to fear by hiding.

"No."

She kissed Lily's forehead.

"We're making them leave."

Brooks checked the pickup form.

The signature authorizing Vivian was digitally valid.

It had come from Claire's own family office.
