Chapter 16 - WHAT HENRY PREPARED
Henry had known the Vances might target Claire through marriage.
He had not known Adrian would be the man.
The old archive room contained an emergency release near the floor and two external keys.
Years earlier, Claire used to lock herself inside during childhood arguments.
Henry installed a low second lock so a child could open it from outside.
Adrian saw a room he could use as a cage.
Henry had accidentally left two ways out.
Lily found one.
Claire visited Henry's grave carrying the Harbor 6 report.
"You should have told the truth," she said.
Wind moved through the cemetery.
"I love you."
She paused.
"Both are true."
Mercer Maritime began restructuring.
The company paid major Harbor 6 settlements and reopened safety cases.
Two divisions were sold.
Family voting power was reduced.
Lily's shares moved into professional trust governance.
Claire could not vote them alone.
That was intentional.
James Porter never returned to corporate leadership.
He testified about Harbor 6 and funded a worker-safety center with his own money.
Claire did not call that forgiveness.
It was restitution.
Lily returned to school.
For months, she hated closed doors.
Claire did not tell her to get over it.
They worked with a therapist.
One day Lily asked to visit the old estate.
She stood in front of the archive door.
"We can remove it," Claire said.
Lily shook her head.
"Doors aren't bad."
"What is?"
"People locking people in."
She turned the brass key.
Opened the door.
Closed it.
Opened it again.
Then Rachel called from the hall.
"Claire, someone is here."
Megan Shaw stood beside the fireplace holding a box of files.
"I found three more women."
Claire's smile disappeared.
Adrian's pattern had started long before her.
Megan set the box down.
"Some of them signed settlements. Some were told nobody would believe them."
Claire looked at Lily's open door.
"Then we start there."

The criminal trial was over.
Accountability was not.
