Chapter 1 - THE ONE RULE

"Touch my legs and you're out of this house."

The warning came a second before Dante Montenegro threw his whiskey glass against the fireplace. Crystal burst across the marble. The guard at the door flinched. Marina Reyes didn't.

"Clean it," Dante ordered.

Marina looked at the glass, then at the damp spot spreading beneath his wheelchair.

"Not until I check that wound."

His dark eyes narrowed. "I didn't ask for a nurse with opinions."

"You advertised for a nurse with a license. There's a difference."

She had been inside his Long Island mansion for forty minutes. Four caregivers had resigned before her, according to the agency. The last had left her shoes by the service entrance and fled without her paycheck.

Dante gripped the chair's armrests. "You've got three seconds."

"You've got an open sore and a fever. We can argue after I make sure you aren't getting an infection. May I lift the blanket?"

He didn't answer. Marina held his gaze until his fingers loosened. Finally, he gave a small, furious nod.

She drew the blanket back. His legs were thin beneath expensive trousers, the muscles wasted after eight months without walking. On his right calf, an angry wound had broken through the skin. She saw another thing: a tiny fresh puncture mark above his ankle.

"Who has been giving you injections here?" she asked.

"My doctor."

"That's not where I'd expect him to give one."

Dante caught her wrist. The guard took a step forward.

"You enjoying this?" Dante asked softly. "Seeing me like this?"

"No. I'm worried nobody else has looked closely enough."

He released her. Marina cleaned and dressed the wound while he watched every movement. When she finished, she pulled the blanket back over his knees and stood.

"You don't get to surprise me again," he said.

"Agreed. But you don't get to hide an infection from your nurse."

For the first time, his mouth almost curved.

"You're hired. Gabriel, show her the east hall."

The security chief led her upstairs without speaking. At midnight, carrying a fresh dressing toward Dante's room, Marina heard two men arguing behind the library door.

"He can still move his toes," one voice said.

The other answered, "Then increase the dose. We only need him helpless until the fourteenth."

May you like

Marina stopped breathing.

Tomorrow was November third.
