Chapter 16 - THE BOY IN THE BLUE JACKET

Gabriel wanted to drive straight to Luca's office.
"They've got Ben," he said. "I know how these men think."
Dante blocked the path of his car with his wheelchair.
"I know how they think too. That's why you don't go alone."
Detective Price coordinated with local police. The school gave her a sign-out photograph: a man in a cap leading Ben by the hand. Ben wore the blue jacket his mother had bought for his birthday. He didn't appear to be resisting, which frightened Gabriel more.
"He would go with someone who said I sent him," Gabriel whispered.
Marina sat with him on the curb. "Tell Price everything you know about the driver. Don't leave anything out to protect Dante."
"I once helped Luca track a witness. I told myself I wasn't hurting anybody."
"You can decide differently now."
Gabriel surrendered his work phone, access cards, and messages. One thread linked the driver to a roadside storage property outside Queens. Officers went there. They found Ben sitting with a coloring book, scared but unharmed, and detained the driver when he tried to leave.
Gabriel held his nephew so tightly the little boy complained he couldn't breathe.
"Sorry," Gabriel said, laughing and crying. "I'm sorry, buddy."
By sunset Price had enough to request arrest warrants tied to the kidnapping and evidence destruction. She warned Dante that the fraud and the crash required separate investigations.
He nodded. "I won't ask you to promise what you can't prove."
Then a company attorney arrived at the hospital with news: Luca had convened an emergency board meeting for the morning. Before the court could resolve the guardianship dispute, he intended to sell a controlling interest in Montenegro's port operations to an offshore buyer.
"Can he do that?" Marina asked.
"Not without the right signatures," Dante said.

The attorney lowered his eyes.
"He has your signature, Mr. Montenegro. A new one. Dated yesterday."
