Chapter 19 - THE COST OF SILENCE

Price found Celeste at a hotel under a false name, frightened and willing to speak with an attorney present. Her account matched portions of the financial record: Luca had authorized the false garage release, Hart had altered treatment charts, and Celeste had approved transfers that kept Dante dependent on their arrangements. Investigators still had to establish which statements were reliable.

Dr. Hart was charged in connection with the records and controlled medications. Luca faced fraud charges and further investigation into the crash. Celeste agreed to preserve her communications and testify under terms negotiated through counsel. None of it happened with a gun on a table or a dramatic confession in Dante's drawing room.

It happened through statements, warrants, and long days in which truth was checked against truth.

Marina's nursing-board complaint was dismissed after investigators reviewed the access logs and found her discharge signature had been misused. She read the decision alone in the hospital cafeteria, then cried into a paper napkin before calling her mother.

"You didn't lose your license?" her mother asked.

"No, Mama. I get to keep doing the work."

Dante apologized to Rosa and Lena in person. He provided legal support without requiring their silence and pledged to pay restitution where investigators found company wrongdoing. He also gave the police everything they requested about his own business, including records he had once kept hidden.

"That could cost you," Claire warned.

"It should," he answered. "I've spent years demanding other people tell me the truth while I protected my own."

Weeks later, at his rehabilitation center, he managed to press his right foot against a therapist's hand. It wasn't a step. It was work, and it exhausted him.

He called Marina afterward.

"I did it," he said, breathless.

"I knew you'd work hard. I didn't know what your nerves would let you do."

He hesitated. "When this is over, will you still be here?"

May you like

Marina watched dusk settle on the city outside her window.

"Dante, there's something I need to tell you about staying."
