Chapter 12 - LENA'S SISTER

Marina drove with Detective Price to the Connecticut address from Lena's photograph. A woman opened the door holding a sleepy toddler.
"I'm Nina Price," she said. "I know why you're here."
Inside, Lena sat at the kitchen table, alive, thinner than in the photograph, and visibly afraid.
"They told me my sister would lose her child if I spoke," Lena said. "I believed them."
"What did Hart make you do?" Price asked.
Lena described sessions where Dante was given medication before motor assessments, leaving him sedated and less able to respond. She'd documented a toe movement and a weak contraction at his ankle. The next morning both notes had disappeared.
"I saved the originals," she said. "Not on the hospital server. On my own encrypted drive."
Marina leaned forward. "Can you identify who changed them?"
"I have the audit trail. But there's something worse."
Lena turned on a laptop. A video showed Dr. Hart speaking with Luca in the locked treatment room.
"He can think he's never walking again," Luca said on the recording. "The board only needs a doctor who agrees."
Hart answered, "What about the woman from the emergency department? Reyes noticed the reflex."
"Then don't let her near the chart."
Marina felt sick. Her name had been part of their calculations long before she entered the mansion.
Lena pointed at a final file labeled CRASH REVIEW.
"I copied that too."

On the screen appeared the signature of the mechanic who had cleared Dante's car.
The signature belonged to a man who had died three weeks before the inspection date.
