Chapter 7 - THE WOMAN WITH THE RING

Celeste Moretti arrived the following morning in a cream coat and an engagement ring worth more than Marina's childhood home.

"Darling," she told Dante, bending to kiss his cheek, "you're upsetting everybody."

He turned his face away. "I'm asking for another doctor."

"Hart is the best."

"Then a second opinion won't hurt him."

Celeste noticed Marina beside the medication cart. "Another nurse? How long until this one learns her place?"

"Her place is helping me," Dante said.

Celeste's eyes hardened. "Luca says the court filing is routine. I'll manage the family trust while you rest."

"You don't manage it now."

"We planned to marry."

"We planned a lot of things before the crash."

Marina excused herself, but Celeste blocked the door.

"I know your name," she said. "Reyes. Your hospital employer must have been disappointed in you."

"My employer can speak for itself."

"Accusations have consequences."

"So does tampering with patient records."

Celeste stepped aside. It was only when Marina reached the hall that she realized her hands were shaking.

Rosa hurried toward her, holding a silver tray. "I found this in Celeste's coat pocket while taking it to the closet."

On the tray sat a small envelope addressed to a judge's clerk. Inside was a photocopy of Dante's signature beneath a petition he had never seen.

Before Marina could ask where the original was, a car horn sounded at the servants' gate.

Rosa looked down the corridor, terrified.

"That's the man Lena warned me about."
