Chapter 14 - THE HEARING

"They want me gone," Marina told Dante.

"I'll buy a newspaper and make them print the truth."

"That's not how truth works."

They hired an attorney, Claire Bennett, who told them bluntly that Celeste could ruin Marina's reputation faster than a court could repair it. Marina handed over her notebook, the messages, the forged discharge record, and the independent medical assessment.

"Don't protect me by hiding anything," Claire said. "Especially the part where you once accessed his hospital file."

"I didn't access it after I resigned," Marina answered. "I remembered a patient. Someone else used my signature."

At the emergency guardianship hearing on November fourteenth, Luca sat beside Celeste. Hart swore that Dante could not manage his affairs. He spoke about pain, medication, and cognitive fatigue.

Dante rolled forward when the judge called his name.

"I can tell you the value of my holdings," he said. "I can tell you who I hired and why. And I can tell you I never signed the document they submitted."

Claire presented a preliminary signature analysis and Dr. Shah's independent capacity evaluation. Lena was prepared to testify about changed treatment records. The judge declined to grant Luca immediate control and ordered preservation of the records while the dispute continued.

Dante's hands trembled under the table, but his voice held steady.

As they left, Celeste stepped into Marina's path.

"Enjoy your little victory," she whispered. "Luca won't stop with a judge."

Before Marina could answer, Gabriel's phone rang. His face went gray.

"There's smoke coming from the treatment wing," he said. "The house alarm isn't working."
