Chapter 9 - ROSA DOESN'T ANSWER

Marina called Rosa's phone. From somewhere beyond the basement door came the faint chime of its ringtone. She hurried toward it, but Dante stopped her.
"No. We call the police."
He was right. She hated that he had to be.
Detective Evelyn Price arrived within twenty minutes. She worked organized financial crime and had been examining irregular transfers from Montenegro Holdings before the crash.
"I thought you'd call eventually," she told Dante. "I didn't expect a missing housekeeper."
Officers found Rosa's phone in a dumpster outside the delivery entrance. The security footage from that hour was missing, but Gabriel recovered a copy from the recorder Luca hadn't known he kept.
The film showed Rosa walking with Pike toward an unmarked van. Two men stood beside it. Rosa appeared frightened, but she wasn't being dragged.
"Someone threatened her," Marina said.
"Possibly," Price answered. "We need to establish what happened."
Back inside, Dr. Shah called with preliminary results. The wound needed continued care, and Dante's presentation did not fit neatly with the absolute prognosis recorded in his discharge file. Further tests were scheduled at an independent hospital.
"Can I walk?" Dante asked.
"I can't answer that over a phone," Dr. Shah said. "But I can tell you the original report leaves out findings that should be there."
When the call ended, Price showed Dante the first financial record in her file: a $2.4 million transfer from his personal rehabilitation trust to a shell company called Northbridge Care.
