Chapter 4 - THE ROOM WITH NO WINDOWS

"Who is Lena Price?" Marina asked.

Dante's expression changed. "The third nurse. She stayed five weeks, then left without saying goodbye."

"Did anyone speak to her afterward?"

"Hart said she took a position in Boston."

Gabriel looked at the printed message. "There's no user attached. It came from the basement terminal."

They went down together. The mansion's lower level housed a gym, a theater, and a locked treatment room Dante said hadn't been used since the accident.

A housekeeper named Rosa met them outside the laundry area. She was sixty, with silver hair and the tired eyes of someone who had learned not to ask questions.

"Lena used to work in there," Rosa said. "She said the treatment logs didn't match the bottles. After that, she started getting strange calls."

"What kind?" Marina asked.

"A man told her to keep her mouth shut if she wanted her sister safe."

Gabriel tried his badge on the treatment-room lock. Access denied. Dante rolled forward and entered the master code. Access denied again.

"This is my house," he said through his teeth.

"Not to the person running this lock," Marina replied.

Rosa handed Marina a folded piece of paper. "Lena put that behind the dryer. She said if another nurse asked about the drugs, I should give it to her."

Inside was a list of dates, each marked with an unusual abbreviation: NM-7. Beside several entries was a note: No dose given; patient moved right foot.

Dante read the line twice.

"Hart told me I imagined those movements."

"We need a second opinion," Marina said. "From someone outside this house."

A door slammed overhead. Gabriel checked his radio and cursed.

"Dr. Hart's car just came through the gate. He wasn't scheduled today."

Dante tucked the paper inside his jacket. "Then we're going to ask him about NM-7."

Marina caught the wheelchair's handle before he could move.

"Not yet. Look at the bottom."

If Hart knows you found this, Rosa disappears next.
