Chapter 6 - THE NIGHT THE ROAD BROKE

"Incapacity?" Dante said into the phone. "I'm listening to you right now, Luca. Does that sound unconscious?"
"You're not thinking clearly," his cousin replied. "Hart's report is conclusive. The court will protect the company."
"From me?"
"From decisions you'll regret."
Dante ended the call and struck the chair's wheel with his fist. Marina waited until he looked at her.
"Tell me about the crash."
For a long time he watched rain slide down the window.
"I was driving to the pier to cancel a shipment. My driver, Vincent, said the brakes felt strange. I told him to take the service road. Halfway down the hill, the pedal went dead."
"You remember that clearly?"
"I remember Vincent trying to steer us away from a school bus. I remember the guardrail. Then a hospital ceiling. Vincent died."
He rubbed his face. "Luca organized the funeral. He told me the car had a manufacturing defect. I never saw the inspection report."
"Who had access to it before you left?"
"Our garage. Luca's driver. Maybe half the security staff."
"We can't assume anyone sabotaged it. But we can find out what the investigation actually said."
Dante studied her. "You keep saying 'we.' Why?"
Marina considered lying about the pay. Instead she said, "I watched people change records at the hospital. I reported one case. My supervisor told me to keep my career if I knew what was good for me. I left. I don't want to be quiet again."
He nodded once.
An hour later, Gabriel brought a grainy photograph recovered from an old garage server. It showed a man beside Dante's car, opening the brake-fluid reservoir the night before the wreck.

The timestamp was clear.
So was the man's jacket: a Montenegro Holdings security uniform.
