“Mama… Mama…”

Maya heard the cry through the pouring rain.

She ran outside barefoot.

“WHERE’S MY DAUGHTER?!”

Then she saw her.

Twenty-two-month-old Lily was sitting inside a trash bin beside the garage, soaked to the skin, her tiny hands gripping the edge while she cried for her mother.

Maya screamed and pulled her out.

Across the driveway, her mother-in-law stood beneath an umbrella.

Dry.

Calm.

Watching.

“You put her in there?”

The older woman didn’t even blink.

“I threw her away.”

Maya stared at her.

“What did you just say?”

“You heard me. You and that child never belonged in this family.”

Lily buried her face against Maya’s chest.

But the woman kept going.

“My son should have married Caroline Whitmore. The mayor’s daughter. Beautiful. Educated. From the right family.”

Her eyes dropped to Lily.

“They should have been together. I still don’t understand how you convinced Daniel to marry you… and then gave him that child.”

Maya had been crying.

Suddenly, she stopped.

Her entire expression changed.

She looked straight into her mother-in-law’s eyes.

“That’s because…”

A car door slammed behind them.

Daniel had just arrived.

He saw his soaked wife.

His crying daughter.

The trash bin.

Then Maya reached into Lily’s wet coat and pulled out a small brass key.

His mother went white.

Because that key opened a room nobody had entered since Daniel’s father died six years earlier.

And inside that room was proof of something the family had spent decades hiding.

Maya tightened her arms around Lily.

Then she finally finished the sentence.

“That’s because Lily isn’t the child you think she is.”

And for the first time…

Daniel’s mother looked terrified.
