Chapter 4 - THE VIDEO THEY PLANNED TO LEAK
Thomas Whitmore said he was documenting child neglect.
The raw video proved otherwise.
He began recording after Margaret put Lily in the bin.
A political media consultant had already prepared an edited version.
Lily alone.
Rain pouring.
No adult visible.
Headline:
TODDLER FOUND ABANDONED AT CARTER ESTATE.
"They were going to blame Maya."
"You put my baby in garbage to create evidence against me."
"I was protecting Daniel."
"From what?"
"You."
"You brought scandal into this house. Another woman's grandson. Another branch. Another claim."
"No. Arthur brought that secret here decades before I was born."
Daniel caught Maya's wrist when she moved too fast.
Then immediately released it.
"Sorry."
Margaret had planned to accuse Maya of neglect and emotional instability.
If Maya lost temporary custody, Margaret would become Lily's family guardian.
Then she could vote Lily's forty-one percent.
The trash bin worked two ways.
If Lily got sick, the trust weakened.
If Lily survived, Maya looked dangerous.
"How long?"
"At least six months."
Staff payroll showed private investigators tracking Maya.
Medical requests.
Nanny reports.
Photographs.
Thomas to Margaret:
Once Lily is legally separated from Maya, Caroline can stabilize Daniel publicly. The marriage announcement follows.
"They wrote the ending before the story happened."
Daniel kept reading.
A second email:
Renee Ellis still has Arthur's copies. Handle that before Friday.
Maya went pale.
Her mother.
Renee lived alone outside Hartford.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
A black SUV had entered the driveway twenty minutes earlier.
Registered to Whitmore campaign security.
Margaret said, "Don't be ridiculous."
"My wife is going to find her mother."
Then Lily began crying upstairs.
The nanny brought down her stuffed rabbit.
A seam along the back had been cut open.
Something had been removed from inside.

Arthur had once told her:
If I die before I can finish this, the rabbit carries the second truth.
