Chapter 1 - THE CHILD IN THE TRASH BIN

The first thing Maya Carter heard was her daughter crying through the rain.

"Mama... Mama..."

Twenty-two-month-old Lily was inside the blue trash bin beside the garage.

Her pink sweater was soaked. Her tiny hands gripped the rim, but she was too small to climb out.

Maya screamed.

"WHERE'S MY DAUGHTER?!"

She yanked Lily from the bin and crushed the child against her chest.

Across the driveway, Margaret Carter stood beneath a black umbrella.

Dry.

Calm.

"You put her in there?"

Margaret did not blink.

"I threw her away."

Maya's face went still.

Rain ran down her hair.

Lily sobbed against her shoulder.

"You and that child never belonged in this family."

"You touch my daughter again and—"

"And what?"

"My son should have married Caroline Whitmore. Everyone knows that."

The mayor's daughter.

Beautiful.

White.

Raised with Daniel Carter since childhood.

Margaret's favorite answer to every question Maya never asked.

"They should have been together," Margaret said. "I still don't know how you convinced Daniel to marry you."

"And then you gave him that child."

Something inside Maya went silent.

Not fear.

Decision.

Margaret mistook it for weakness.

"Caroline would have given this family the right kind of future."

"That's because..."

"Daniel didn't marry me because I convinced him."

Margaret's smile faded.

"He married me to protect Lily from you."

Silence.

Margaret's umbrella tilted.

"What?"

Maya's voice dropped.

"And Lily isn't Daniel's biological daughter."

Margaret went pale.

A car door slammed behind them.

Daniel saw the trash bin.

He saw his mother.

"Maya."

"Your mother threw Lily away."

Daniel went completely still.

But Maya reached into Lily's wet coat and pulled out a small brass key.

Maya said, "She was holding this when I found her."

The key belonged to Arthur Carter's locked study.

Daniel's father had been dead six years.

And before he died, he had told Maya one thing:

If Margaret ever learns who Lily really is, open the study.
