Chapter 12 - THE BOATHOUSE

Thomas held a gun.
Margaret's mouth was taped.
Maya stayed behind Ortiz's agents.
Thomas smiled.
"Look at us."
Daniel said, "Let her go."
Margaret stared at her son, terrified.
"After everything she did?"
Daniel's face stayed cold.
"Her crimes belong to a court."
Not Thomas.
Not Daniel.
That distinction mattered.
Thomas wanted the second ledger.
He believed Arthur hid originals in the boathouse safe.
The brass key fit.
Arthur had designed the study key for both locks.
Thomas had never known.
Maya did.
Arthur had told Maya about the second lock.
"I'll open it."
Maya nodded once. Trust me.
Inside were no ledgers.
Only a video camera.
Already recording.
Arthur's voice came from a speaker.
"If Thomas Whitmore is standing in this room, he finally became predictable."
Thomas spun.
The distraction lasted seconds.
Thomas fired once into the ceiling.
Margaret screamed behind the tape.
Maya removed it.
Margaret gasped.
"You saved me."
Maya's expression did not soften.
"No."
"I helped police arrest a man."
"My daughter is still the baby you put in garbage."
Good.
Rescue did not erase harm.
Thomas was arrested.
The safe video contained Arthur's final testimony.
He admitted helping Thomas's campaign.
Admitted hiding Julian.
Admitted allowing Margaret to believe family image mattered more than truth.
"My greatest mistake was thinking secrecy protected people."
Arthur's final instruction concerned Maya and Daniel.
"If they choose each other after this, let it be their choice. I asked for a legal marriage to protect Lily. I had no right to ask for a life."
Their marriage had started as a shield.
Arthur was telling them they did not owe him forever.
Julian appeared on screen.
Alive.
May you like
Recorded three hours before his boat left.
"If I don't come back, Thomas is not the only person I'm afraid of."
