Chapter 14 - MARGARET AT THE MARINA

Margaret denied touching Julian's boat.
Then Caroline found a photograph.
A charity event at the marina.
Same day.
Margaret standing beside Preston near Julian's slip.
Margaret stopped denying she was there.
"I followed Arthur."
"Why?" Daniel asked.
"He had been meeting that boy."
"His son."
She admitted finding Julian's boat open.
She climbed aboard.
She saw Preston near the engine compartment.
"What did he tell you?"
"That he was checking something for Thomas."
"And you walked away?"
"Yes."
"You knew something was wrong."
"I knew men were fighting over business."
Maya's voice sharpened.
"You knew enough to ask questions."
"I did not kill Julian."
"No."
"But you spent your whole life walking away from things that benefited you."
That landed.
Margaret had not cut the line.
But she saw danger and chose silence because Julian's disappearance restored Daniel as the only heir.
Then Ortiz received Arthur's medical review.
No evidence of poisoning.
One death the family had not caused.
The result almost felt strange.
Then Thomas Whitmore offered a plea.
He would confess to the campaign laundering, the custody plot, the driver killing, and conspiracy around Julian's death.
In exchange, prosecutors would not seek the harshest sentence.
Margaret was charged with child endangerment, attempted fraud, conspiracy, and trust theft.
Preston faced homicide conspiracy and forgery charges.
Owen faced obstruction and conspiracy but cooperated.
Caroline faced no charges tied to the core scheme.
She had helped her father with public messaging in the past.
She admitted that.
But no evidence showed she knew about violence.
Then Margaret asked to see Daniel. He refused.
She asked to see Lily. Maya answered herself. "No."
Margaret looked at her through a courtroom hallway.
"I am her grandmother."
"That is biology."
"Access is earned."
Margaret's face crumpled.
For the first time, the family name could not open a door.
Then Rachel brought the final trust ruling.
Lily's forty-one percent was confirmed.

But one clause gave Maya a choice.
As Lily's surviving biological parent's named guardian, Maya could move the entire block out of Carter family control.
