Chapter 15 - MAYA'S CHOICE

Every reporter expected Maya to keep the shares.
Forty-one percent of Carter Holdings.
Enough to make her one of the most powerful people in the company.
Margaret called her a gold digger before the hearing.
Then Maya transferred Lily's voting rights into an independent trust.
Professional fiduciaries.
No Carter family member controlling it.
Not Daniel.
Not Maya.
Not Margaret.
The economic benefit remained Lily's.
The power did not belong to any adult around her.
Daniel supported the decision.
That surprised the board.
One director said, "You are giving away control."
Daniel answered, "No. I'm giving up possession of something that was never mine."
That was why their marriage had survived becoming real.
Daniel could learn.
So could she.
They had secrets to repair.
Arthur's request.
Julian's history.
The rushed marriage.
Years of fear.
They started therapy. Not because they were broken.
Because truth needed somewhere to go after survival.
Caroline moved out of her father's house.
She resigned from the Whitmore Foundation.
She visited Maya once.
"I should have asked more questions."
"So should a lot of people."
"I didn't know what Margaret planned."
"I believe you."
"Do you forgive me?"
"For what you didn't know, there's nothing to forgive."
Maya continued:
"For the times you enjoyed being treated like the future Mrs. Carter while I was humiliated? That's yours to work on."
Good.
Then Rachel discovered Catherine Carter's personal letter to Julian.
Catherine had known Arthur's secret son existed.
She had tried to meet him.
Another supposedly protective decision.
The letter ended:
If this family ever tells you blood is everything, remember they only say that when the blood is convenient.
Then Lily toddled across the living room and knocked over a basket.
A small envelope slid from beneath the lining.
Arthur's handwriting.
FOR MAYA - AFTER SHE IS FREE TO LEAVE.
Neither opened it immediately.
May you like
That mattered.
For once, a Carter secret could wait until the person named on it chose.
