Chapter 3 - THE WHITMORE AGREEMENT

Attorney Rachel Kim arrived before sunrise.

She had handled Daniel's independent business matters for years.

Not the Carter family trust.

That office belonged to Preston Hale.

Margaret's lawyer.

Rachel read Catherine Carter's original trust twice.

"Lily's claim is valid if Julian's paternity can be established."

Maya reached into Arthur's envelope.

DNA reports.

Birth records.

Photographs.

A notarized acknowledgment signed by Arthur.

"Then it's established."

"This is fraud."

"No. The fraud was hiding him."

The next file was worse.

WHITMORE-CARTER FAMILY ALIGNMENT.

Dated seventeen years earlier.

Margaret and Mayor Thomas Whitmore had planned for Daniel to marry Caroline.

Not because the teenagers were in love.

Because the marriage would combine political influence with Carter money.

If Daniel remained Arthur's only recognized heir, Margaret's branch controlled nearly everything.

Julian ruined that.

Lily finished the job.

Maya said, "Arthur believed the Whitmores would challenge Lily if they found out."

Margaret snapped.

"Arthur was paranoid."

"No."

A trust amendment had been drafted three months after Julian died.

If an "unrecognized descendant" died before age five, that branch reverted to Margaret's management trust.

Lily was not yet two.

Daniel's face hardened.

"Who drafted this?"

Preston Hale.

Then Daniel's phone rang.

Caroline Whitmore.

"Daniel, are you home?"

"Yes."

A pause.

"Your mother said Maya was leaving today."

"She said after Maya and Lily were gone, the trust problem would disappear."

Daniel's voice dropped.

"How did she say it would disappear?"

Caroline went silent.

Then whispered, "I think you need to ask my father."

The line disconnected.

Seconds later, security chief Owen Blake entered with a tablet.

"We recovered the garage camera."

The video showed Margaret carrying Lily into the rain.

She put Lily into the trash bin.

Then she stepped away.

But she was not alone.

A black sedan waited near the gate.

May you like

The rear window lowered.

Mayor Thomas Whitmore was filming the entire thing.
