Chapter 11 - MAYA WAS WATCHED

Maya had been watched from the second trimester.
Photographs showed her leaving prenatal appointments.
Buying a crib.
Visiting Julian's grave.
Meeting Arthur.
Thomas Whitmore's people knew Lily existed before Margaret did.
That explained the difference.
Thomas planned around Lily.
Margaret only learned recently.
"Who told her?" Daniel asked.
"My father."
Three weeks ago.
Right after Arthur's old trust archive was scheduled for digitization.
Thomas feared the lineage documents would surface.
So he told Margaret.
Not gently.
He told her Julian had left a child.
A girl.
Living under her roof.
Margaret looked at Lily differently from that moment.
The cold silences.
The sudden complaints about toys.
The demand Lily stop eating in the formal breakfast room.
The trash bin was not one explosion of cruelty.
It was escalation.
Then Owen found audio from the kitchen smart speaker.
Margaret and Thomas.
Thomas: If Daniel will not remove Maya, force the issue.
Margaret: I won't hurt the baby.
Thomas: You don't have to. Make Maya look like she did.
Margaret had drawn a line.
That mattered.
The audio continued.
Margaret: Caroline will never agree if she knows about Lily.
Thomas: Caroline agrees when I tell her to.
Caroline closed her eyes. Her father had treated her as another asset.
Thomas: And after Saturday, Daniel won't be a problem either.
Daniel looked at Caroline. She went pale.
Margaret whispered, "I didn't know."
Maya believed that part.
Margaret planned to remove Maya and Lily.
Thomas planned to remove Daniel too.
The alliance was never equal.
Then Ortiz's phone rang.
Thomas Whitmore had disappeared from City Hall.
His driver was missing.
His campaign plane was still grounded.
A traffic camera caught his SUV heading east.
Toward the Carter estate.
"Why come here?"
Not the mansion.
The old boathouse.
The building Arthur used before his death.
Arthur's study key had a second notch.
A dual lock.
At the boathouse, the door stood open.
May you like
Inside sat Thomas Whitmore.
And beside him, tied to a chair, was Margaret.
