Chapter 19 - TWENTY-TWO MONTHS

On Lily's third birthday, Maya thought about the trash bin.

Not all day.

That mattered.

The party was small.

Renee.

Daniel.

Caroline, invited by Maya.

A few staff members.

No political cameras.

No Carter board.

Lily wore rain boots even though the sky was clear.

She loved puddles now.

Maya had worried rain would frighten her.

It did not.

Children remembered in strange ways.

Sometimes bodies remembered what words could not.

Sometimes they moved on before adults did.

Daniel watched Lily climb onto a plastic playhouse.

"She's going to jump."

"Let her decide."

Lily jumped.

Two inches.

Celebrated like an Olympian.

Later Caroline stood beside Maya.

"My father used to say your marriage was a trick."

Maya looked at Daniel across the yard.

"It started as a legal arrangement."

Caroline's eyes widened.

"Arthur asked Daniel to protect me and Lily."

"And then?"

"Then your father kept trying to decide what everyone should be."

"That sounds familiar."

"And Daniel and I decided for ourselves."

That was the truth Margaret never understood.

Maya did not convince Daniel.

Arthur did not own the marriage.

Lily did not require it.

Daniel stayed because he chose Maya.

Maya stayed because she chose him.

Every day remained renewable.

Then Daniel approached with a small box.

Maya raised an eyebrow.

"If that's jewelry at a toddler party, I will leave you."

Inside was the brass key from Arthur's study.

Mounted in a plain wooden frame.

Below it:

NO SECRET OUTRANKS A CHILD'S SAFETY.

"That's dramatic."

"I'm a Carter."

"Unfortunately."

He kissed her forehead.

Lily shouted from the yard.

"Mama!"

Lily held a blue plastic toy bin over her head like a helmet.

"No climbing inside that one."

"Why?"

"Because Mama said so."

Lily accepted that for exactly three seconds.

Then asked, "Why?"

Daniel laughed.

Maya did too.

May you like

Good.

Questions were welcome here.
