Chapter 9 - BEFORE SATURDAY

Daniel had a severe shellfish allergy.

His epinephrine and antihistamine were managed by the estate clinic.

The new Friday-night dosage would make him heavily drowsy.

Saturday's foundation dinner would serve seafood.

"Sedate him. Trigger an allergic reaction. Call it an accident."

Caroline whispered, "Then what?"

If Daniel died after publicly "reconciling" with Caroline, Margaret and Thomas could argue for family control of his branch while attacking Lily's status.

Messy.

Not guaranteed.

But enough chaos to freeze the trust and protect their money.

"They were planning my death too."

"Once you stopped being useful."

That hurt because it was true.

The estate doctor was arrested.

He claimed Preston gave him the dosage order.

Preston claimed Margaret did.

Margaret denied everything.

Everyone passed responsibility sideways.

Maya had seen enough.

She carried Lily into the hearing room when the emergency trust judge arrived by video.

Margaret objected.

"That child should not be present."

"She is the reason we're here."

The judge froze all Carter family voting rights.

Independent fiduciary control.

No Daniel.

No Margaret.

No Preston.

Until the trust's lineage and fraud questions were resolved.

Daniel surprised everyone.

"Good."

"You would surrender control?"

"I would rather lose control than let you use my daughter as leverage."

The judge heard that.

So did the board.

Arthur Carter was Julian's biological father.

Lily was Julian's biological daughter.

Forty-one percent confirmed.

The child she said did not belong had the strongest birth-order claim in the next generation.

Then Ortiz entered with another result.

The sedative in Thomas Whitmore's dead driver matched medication found in Preston Hale's private cabinet.

Preston was arrested.

As agents led him away, he looked at Margaret.

"You promised Thomas would protect me."

Margaret's face went blank.

"Promised him what?"

"Ask your mother who paid me after Arthur died."

Margaret started toward the door.

May you like

Owen blocked her.

"She paid me with money from Lily's trust before Lily was even born."
