Chương 11 - Rachel’s MotherMargaret arrived at Ethan’s house with a casserole.

Exactly like someone who had no idea her name had entered an investigation.
Ethan did not accuse her.
He asked.
“Did you know Diane was moving money?”
Margaret set the dish down.
“No.”
“Did you know Rachel wanted an independent trustee?”
Her face changed.
Small.
Enough.
Lily called from the hallway by mistake.
“Mom?”
Then stopped.
Rachel’s mother closed her eyes at the word.
Ethan softened.
“Did Rachel talk to you?”
Margaret sat down.
“She told me she didn’t trust Diane.”
“And?”
“I thought illness was making her suspicious.”
Again.
Rachel spoke.
People translated it into symptoms.
Margaret admitted she had encouraged Diane to “take over practical things.”
Bills.
Meals.
Schedules.
She believed Ethan worked too much and Rachel was too sick.
“Did you tell Diane Lily needed stricter discipline?”
Margaret looked ashamed.
“Yes.”
“Did you tell her to withhold food?”
“No.”
That mattered.
Then Ethan asked about the trust.
Margaret had suggested family should control family money.
She opposed the independent trustee.
But she had not known about forged access or transfers.
She had contributed pressure.
Not fraud.
Different guilt.
Then Margaret said:
“Rachel called me the week before she died.”
Ethan leaned forward.
“What did she say?”
“She told me, ‘If I’m wrong, I’ll apologize. If I’m right, Lily will need you to stop protecting adults from consequences.’”
Margaret began crying.
“I didn’t listen.”
Ethan sat across from her.
“Neither did I.”
Then Margaret took something from her purse.
A voicemail she had never deleted.
Rachel’s voice.
“Mom, please come over before five tomorrow. I don’t want Lily alone with Diane.”
Timestamp:
The day Rachel was hospitalized for the last time.
Margaret had not gone.
She had been angry.
She thought Rachel was being dramatic.
Lily had spent that evening with Diane.
When Ethan later asked Lily what happened, she whispered:
“That was the first night Aunt Diane said Mommy might die because I made her too tired.”
Ethan’s stomach turned.

Then Lily added:
“And that was the night she made me sign my name.”
