Chương 10 - Box 318The safe-deposit box was at a different bank.

Not Mark’s.

Rachel had been careful.

Monica met Ethan there.

Lily stayed with Dr. Chen and Ethan’s father.

Inside Box 318 were three things.

Rachel’s wedding ring.

A flash drive.

A sealed letter marked FOR LILY WHEN SHE’S OLDER.

Ethan touched the ring and nearly broke.

Then he opened the flash drive.

Rachel had saved audio recordings.

One captured Diane confronting Rachel.

“You’re turning Ethan against me.”

Rachel answered:

“No. I’m asking him to look.”

“You’re sick.”

“Yes.”

“You’re medicated.”

“Yes.”

“You forget things.”

“Sometimes.”

Then Rachel said:

“But I did not forget my daughter telling me she was hungry.”

Silence.

Diane’s voice hardened.

“You always baby her.”

“She is six.”

“She needs discipline.”

“She needs dinner.”

The recording ended.

Another file captured Mark.

Rachel: “Why did you access Lily’s trust file?”

Mark: “Routine review.”

Rachel: “Six times?”

No answer.

Rachel: “I’m reporting this.”

Mark: “Think about what stress will do to your family.”

Not a threat to kill.

A threat to weaponize her illness.

Ethan handed everything to Harris.

Then he opened Lily’s sealed letter.

Monica stopped him.

“It says for Lily when she’s older.”

He put it down.

Rachel still deserved boundaries, even dead.

Then Monica found a smaller note beneath the flash drive.

For Ethan.

He opened it.

If Diane tells you I hated her, she’s wrong. I loved her once. That’s why this hurts.

Rachel had refused to turn Diane into a monster.

She had named behavior instead.

That became Ethan’s model.

Facts.

Not mythology.

Then Harris called.

Mark had agreed to talk.

He claimed Diane did not invent the scheme.

According to him, Rachel’s own mother, Margaret, had started the pressure years earlier.

Ethan went still.

Margaret.

Lily’s grandmother.

The woman who had been calling every day asking when she could visit.
