Chương 12 - Lily’s SignatureSeven-year-olds sign things.

Birthday cards.

School worksheets.

Drawings.

Diane had turned that innocence into evidence.

She gave Lily blank sheets.

Told her to practice her full name.

LILY RACHEL COLE.

Again.

Again.

Again.

Then investigators found scanned documents where the same childlike signature appeared as acknowledgment of “behavior plans.”

One form stated Lily agreed she had hidden food because of “compulsive grief-related eating.”

Another claimed she admitted lying about Diane’s discipline.

Lily had never read them.

She had signed blank pages.

Harris stared at the forms.

“That’s ugly.”

Ethan was past adjectives.

Then Monica found why the forms mattered.

Mark had inserted them into a draft packet for a future family-court filing.

If Ethan ever challenged Diane’s involvement, she could claim Lily herself admitted the behavior.

Manufactured self-discrediting.

From a child.

Mark’s attorney began discussing a plea.

Diane’s attorney did too.

But Diane still insisted Rachel had “turned everyone against her.”

Then Dr. Chen gave Ethan an important warning.

“Do not make Lily responsible for the case.”

“What does that mean?”

“Stop asking her for details at home.”

Ethan felt defensive.

Then understood.

He had started listening too late and now wanted to know everything.

That could become another pressure.

So he stopped.

He let professionals ask what was necessary.

At home, they talked about school.

Movies.

Pancakes.

Ordinary life.

One night Lily left half a sandwich on her plate.

Ethan’s chest tightened.

He wanted to ask if she was hiding food again.

Instead he said:

“Full?”

She nodded.

“Okay.”

He wrapped the sandwich and put it in the refrigerator.

No lecture.

No monitoring.

Lily watched him.

Then whispered:

“I can eat it later?”

“Of course.”

Her shoulders relaxed.

That tiny moment mattered more than any courtroom.

Then Harris called with a new discovery.

Diane had not only accessed Lily’s trust.

She had applied to become co-trustee two weeks after Rachel died.

The application included a letter of support.

Signed by Ethan.

He had never written it.
