Chương 5 - Rachel’s Last RecordingRachel looked directly into the camera.

“If you’re seeing this, Ethan, please don’t waste time feeling guilty.”
He almost laughed from the pain of it.
She knew him too well.
Behind her, Diane’s voice came through the door.
“Rachel, open this door.”
Rachel continued.
“I found transfers from Lily’s education trust into a consulting company tied to Diane.”
Ethan opened the bank folder.
There they were.
$8,000.
$12,500.
$19,000.
Then $40,000.
Total: $126,000.
The consulting company was called North Meadow Services.
Owner:
Diane Cole.
Ethan felt sick.
Rachel’s video continued.
“She told me it was temporary. Then she told me you approved it.”
“I didn’t,” Ethan whispered.
Lily looked at him.
“I know.”
Rachel said she contacted the bank.
The transfers stopped.
Then Diane changed tactics.
She began telling relatives Rachel’s treatments were affecting her judgment.
She started documenting Rachel’s “confusion.”
Missed appointments.
Forgotten conversations.
Moments of exhaustion.
All real.
None meant Rachel was incompetent.
Then Rachel leaned toward the camera.
“What scares me most is Lily.”
The pounding stopped.
Rachel’s voice dropped.
“Diane has started controlling her food when I’m too sick to come downstairs. She says Lily is spoiled. She makes her finish chores before dinner. She told her crying is manipulation.”
Lily buried her face against Ethan.
He held her.
Rachel continued.
“Yesterday Lily asked me if she could keep crackers under her pillow. I asked why. She said, ‘For days when Aunt Diane decides I don’t deserve dinner.’”
Ethan shut his eyes.
The video kept playing.
“I confronted Diane. She said if I tell you, she’ll remind everyone how much medication I’m taking and say I imagined it.”
Rachel looked tired.
But not confused.
Not once.
Then she said:
“I asked Lily to promise me one thing.”
Lily began trembling.
Rachel looked into the camera.
“If I die before I fix this, Lily is to tell someone outside the family if she feels unsafe.”
Ethan looked at his daughter.
“The stranger.”
She nodded.
“Mommy said strangers don’t always know our secrets.”
Then the recording shifted.
Rachel held up a blue folder.
“There’s one more thing. Diane is trying to make herself trustee if Ethan is ever declared unavailable.”
Ethan stared.
“Unavailable?”
Rachel’s expression changed.
“She has been collecting information about your work travel, your insurance, and your emergency contacts.”
The video ended with a knock.
Not Diane’s voice.
A man’s.
“Mrs. Cole? It’s Mark Bennett from the bank.”
May you like
Ethan knew that name.
Mark Bennett was now Diane’s fiancé.
