Chương 9 - What Lily SawLily began therapy with Dr. Maya Chen, a child psychologist recommended by Harris.
The first sessions were quiet.
Then Lily started drawing.
A house.
A sun.
Three stick figures.
Mommy.
Daddy.
Lily.
Then a fourth figure outside the house.
Aunt Diane.
On another page, Diane stood inside.
Daddy was drawn far away behind a rectangle.
“Is that my office?” Ethan asked later.
Dr. Chen nodded.
“Lily says you were always inside the phone.”
That sentence hurt.
He had video-called from airports.
Hotels.
Conference rooms.
He thought showing his face meant being present.
Then Lily drew a small square under her bed.
“Food?”
Dr. Chen asked.
Lily nodded.
“Mommy told me to keep some where Aunt Diane wouldn’t look.”
Rachel had known.
Even while sick, she had created tiny survival systems.
Ethan cried in his car after the session.
Then stopped hiding every emotion.
At home he sat beside her.
“I’m sad.”
Lily looked worried.
“Because of me?”
“No.”
He said it immediately.
“I’m sad because Mommy tried to tell me something, and I didn’t understand.”
Lily whispered:
“She said you were tired.”
“She was being kind.”
“She said tired people can wake up.”
Ethan laughed through tears.
“That sounds like her.”
Then Lily finally told him what happened on Rachel’s last clear day.
Rachel had called Lily into the bedroom.
Given her the folded note.
Made her promise:
If Aunt Diane ever makes you afraid to eat, go outside where someone can see you.
Not hide.
Not stay quiet.
Find a safe grown-up.
Tell them you promised Mommy.
That was why Lily stood at the side gate.
She had not been waiting to be rescued by chance.
She had been following instructions.
Eight months late.
But exactly.
Then Lily added:
“Mommy gave me something else.”
Ethan froze.
“What?”
“A key.”
“Where is it?”
Lily walked to her toy chest.
Inside an old stuffed rabbit was a small brass key.

Ethan stared.
Rachel had left one more place to look.
