Chương 16 - Rachel’s Letter to LilyA year after Rachel’s death, Lily asked about the sealed letter.

The one from Box 318.

Ethan did not decide alone.

He asked Dr. Chen.

He asked Monica.

Then he asked Lily.

“Do you want to read it now, or save it?”

Lily thought for two days.

“Now.”

They sat together on Rachel’s old bedroom rug.

Lily opened the envelope herself.

My Lily-bug,

If you are reading this, I’m not where we wanted me to be.

Lily stopped.

Cried.

Then continued.

Rachel wrote about ordinary things.

Burnt pancakes.

Bedtime songs.

Lily’s habit of putting socks on the dog.

Then:

I need you to know that keeping a promise does not mean keeping a secret forever.

Lily looked at Ethan.

He squeezed her hand.

Rachel continued:

If someone tells you silence keeps the family safe, ask whether the silence is actually keeping the wrong person comfortable.

Ethan closed his eyes.

Then:

You are allowed to tell Dad when you are scared. If Dad is slow, tell him again. If he is still slow, tell someone else. Loving him does not mean waiting forever for him to understand.

Ethan laughed through tears.

Rachel had anticipated his failure without condemning him.

At the bottom:

And Daddy, if you’re reading over her shoulder, stop.

Lily burst out laughing.

Ethan did too.

He covered the page.

“Fine.”

“No! You can read.”

Rachel’s final line:

Home is the place where you should never have to earn dinner, safety, or love.

Lily folded the letter.

Then she walked to the kitchen.

Opened the pantry.

Took a granola bar.

Sat at the table.

And ate the whole thing.

No hiding.

No pockets.

Ethan watched without making it a moment.

That was the point.

Then Lily asked:

“Can we make Mommy’s office different?”

“How?”

“Not sad.”

They did.

But first, Ethan found one final file in Rachel’s cloud archive.

A folder scheduled to unlock on the anniversary of her death.
