Chương 17 - Stop ApologizingThe folder contained no new evidence.

No hidden crime.
No secret account.
Just Rachel speaking to Ethan.
She looked exhausted.
Still smiling.
“You’re going to blame yourself.”
He laughed once.
Of course she knew.
“You’ll say you worked too much. You’ll say you should have believed me sooner. Some of that will be true.”
Ethan stared at the screen.
Rachel continued.
“But guilt is only useful if it teaches you where to stand next.”
Then she said:
“Do not spend Lily’s childhood staring backward at mine.”
That sentence changed him.
He had been turning every meal into a test.
Every quiet moment into a warning sign.
Every closed bedroom door into panic.
He thought vigilance meant protection.
Sometimes it meant fear wearing a responsible face.
So he adjusted.
He kept boundaries.
Kept therapy.
Kept the independent trustee.
Kept his reduced travel.
But he stopped watching Lily like she might break.
He let her bike to the corner with a friend.
Let her leave half a cookie.
Let her be seven.
Then Tom Walker called.
The stranger who filmed the video.
He had never asked for anything.
Ethan invited him to dinner.
Tom came with his wife.
Lily hugged him.
“You helped me.”
Tom looked embarrassed.
“I just stopped walking.”
That stayed with Ethan.
Sometimes that was the difference.
Stopping.
Looking.
Asking one more question.
After dinner, Tom handed Ethan the original full-resolution video.
“There’s a part I never sent.”
Ethan’s heart tightened.
Tom played it.
Before Diane came outside, Lily had whispered one additional sentence.
“I think Aunt Diane took Mommy’s blue book because Mommy said it had the truth.”
Ethan stared.
Blue book?
Not folder.
Book.
Lily looked confused.
Then remembered.
“Mommy’s recipe book.”
Rachel’s blue recipe binder had been missing since the funeral.
Diane had not taken it.

Margaret had.
And Margaret still had it at her house.
